If you’ve ever wondered what it is like to stroll through a real life American ghost town, you can do just that right here in Florida at Ellaville in Madison county. What was once a bustling community along the Suwannee River is now a desolate, dilapidated and time-worn scene akin to an American horror flick. This Civil War-era town flourished briefly in the 19th century before a series of tragedies led the town to ruin. Among what remains of it, there’s an old bridge offering some very nice views of the Suwannee River’s limestone banks and the railroad bridge. There’s also a creepy old cemetery and many abandoned homes that, to date, remain empty. This makes for a rather picturesque (and unconventional) hike south of highway 90.
